Getty Center

One of our new favorite places around here is the Getty Center. This is a ginormous institution devoted to art and archeticture. We went a couple of weeks ago, and went back again today with my Mom and Chuck (These pictures are from the previous trip.) Currently, there is an exhibit of Bernini portraiture: the first ever showing of Bernini's art in North America. We couldn't take pictures at that exhibit due to proprietary rights and blah blah blah, but were able to get up close and personal with gorgeous marble busts, delicately carved into lace garments and the most intricate details of the human face. We also got to poke around within inches of works of art by Van Gough, Monet, Degas, etc.

If I were a better photographer, I would have LOVED to spend all day, pointing my lens at all the amazing little nooks and crannies of the structures that house these priceless works of art. It was creatively inspiring, but alas I have only these pictures to convey my awe at the many lovely things we saw.

I think that's awesome that you family goes to and loves museums!! --I like your "followers" plea. Reminds me of Michael (The Office) talking about loving people a certain dollar amount at Christmas time. =D (Though people obviously love you!)

That's MY extremely CULTURED and ARTSY family going to those museums!! Yay! My mother would be so proud! and I am so proud. when do I get to come along?

You dad didn't exactly love art museums, but he would take us once in awhile. Do you remember? Balboa Park? San Francisco Museum of Art?

please tell me you remember.

Where is that? I would love to go when we come down in December, if time permits.

It's just a hop, skip and jump north of where we live, Diana.

The best part is that it is completely free, with the exception of $10 for parking.

BTW Shanabug, you look positively beautiful in the photo where you are standing next to the Van Gough.

Mom, I honestly don't remember, and we don't consider ourselves "cultured", even though we love art and museums.

I mean, do you actually READ our crass and crazy blogs?

No culture. No culture at all. And that's a'ight.

It's not about status or appearances for us. I am quite proud of how white-trash-ilicious I am (I only speak for myself, of course).

It just blows our minds how the likes of Bernini or Michelangelo can create such breathtaking beauty out of blocks of marble, or how Van Gough painted such bold, colorful exaggerations of nature.

Stunning.

I remember going to the Malibu J.Paul Getty for field trips as a kid. I remember once they got us all worked into a lather about how we were going to do an archeological dig. I was very excited, because I wanted to be an archeologist. When we got there, there were plastic bins full of sand and plastic toys! So now, when I think of the Getty, if think of those lame plastic bins, and the bitter taste of disappointment.

But maybe I should give it another shot?

Wow, Shana! You got some great pictures! I have heard of the Getty museum before, but didn't realize where it was. We just took a whirlwind trip to So Cal. But next time I take a more relaxing trip down there, it sounds like this is a place I should visit! Thanks for the recommendation.
