Thoughts on a Life Cut Far Too Short

My cousin Scott and his wife Maiko had a beautiful baby girl about two weeks ago. They named her Sayumi. She was welcomed by her big brother Aiden, and met her grandmother from Japan just in time for a sudden, inexplicably relentless virus to lay waste to her perfect little body. One helicopter ride and a thousand needle sticks later, she lost her fight with the invisible villain that invaded so swiftly.

To my grief-stricken cousin and his beautiful family, I offer nothing but my deepest condolences. You were expecting the antithesis of this day just a few weeks prior, and so very recently celebrated her entry into this world. I cannot imagine watching that fragile little soul drift back out so few days after her arrival.

I can only issue my paltry offerings (as every good Mormon mom does), of food whenever you need it. I'm happy to lend you my ear whenever you need to vent. Our home is open to you in whatever state of grief you may be in. You are loved. Sayumi is so very loved. We ache for you.

From the perspective of a parent, I think there is nothing more heart-wrenching than situations like this. Death is always difficult, but especially so when it is a child, or baby. I am so sincerely sorry.

So sad. Send her over to the adailyscoop.blogspot.com where Stephanie Waite has set up a beautiful site for grieving mommies.
