The Little Pituitary That Could

When Nathan was a toddler, he stopped growing. I'm not exaggerating. He flat out STOPPED growing. We had this Winnie the Pooh growth chart on his closet door, which had all these little marks with dates on it... except all the marks were on top of each other, and we were running out of room on that one spot for the dates. When I took him to his pediatrician, he would say, "Don't worry. You're short. Your husband is short. Sure, his growth doesn't even track on the chart, but statistically speaking, he's right where he ought to be."

Right.

So I put up with that answer for a couple of years, and then found out (through the amazing insights of a pediatric dentist), that all we needed to discover if there was anything pathologically wrong was a wrist x-ray. That would tell us his bone age, and we could decide from those results if further inquiry was necessary to determine the source of the problem. (If there actually was one. Which I was pretty sure there was, despite my lazy doctor's opinion.)

So I went back to the dolt of a pediatrician and demanded a wrist x-ray. Reluctantly, he agreed. Lo and behold, our 5 year old had the bone age of a 2 1/2 year old. "Okay Dr. Smarty Pants. Now what?"

So we were referred to an endocrinologist and several blood tests, MRIs, and consultations later, we had a diagnosis of Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) for Nate.

Treatment for GHD? Daily injections of synthetic growth hormone... to the tune of about $50,000/year, which our insurance company did not like to pay. So, after about a year and a half on the stuff, and six or seven inches of growth later, he was no longer eligible to receive the treatment.

Bummer. He was left to drop off the charts again.

But don't feel bad for Nathan. Oh no! It seems his pituitary has a mind of its own these days. It seems to have forgotten that it doesn't work properly.

In the past year, his clothes have apparently all shrunk. His voice, which used to sound like mine, has suddenly begun to echo his father's deep, resonating tone. And the rage... Oh! the hormonal rage... Yup. Nathan seems to be growing as quickly as he did during those first few months of treatment (4 1/2 inches in 6 months! ...It was like watching Gumby stretch!)

But after all that hard work getting him diagnosed (a process that took about a year, and was actually the motivation for my return to higher education), I actually said these words the other day as he pointed out another pair of jeans he can no longer fit into:

"Nathan! Stop Growing! We can't afford you any more!"

...Definitely one of my prouder parenting moments.

Shanana, my sweetie, you know I married you to ensure that none of my offspring would be taller than I.

Oh, and LOVE. There was some of that stuff too.

BTW I'm 5-8, not completely "shrimpy".

Tom "I Know Everything About Postpartum Depression", Cruise is 5-8.

Okay I know this is a proud moment but honestly there is a part of me that is grieving. I want my cute little Nathan back. Okay don't let him read that. Preteens hate to be cute or little..much worse if they have a combination of the two.

What is his exact height now?

Way to go dude! I know as a teen he hates to hear it, but he was an adorable little munchkin for many many years.

crazy. lincoln would love to be as tall as his uncle chris who is 6'7", but geoff is only 5'9" & me 5'2" and so Linc would need some of that growing spunk. if they find it, send some our way. we want tall kids too.

LOL! Diana, you beat me to it. Too funny!

But seriously.

Nathan, you're good enough, smart enough, and doggonit, people like you.

He really is a very cool kid.

He's gonna love this comment thread!

Annie, he's still not quite as tall as me, so he still has a LONG way to go before he's normal. However, the RATE of growth is what is blowing me away.

Sounds like you should have invested all the money you saved in clothing when he was little to afford his wardrobe NOW.

BTW - Nathan, come let Auntie Amy squeeze your wittle cheeks.

Love you.

He's even cute when he's mad!!!!Peter, on the other hand, is at least 6'0" now....but he is as skiny as a bean pole!!! He loves to tell Sanders, "I can see the top of your head, dad." Sanders is 5'11".I think Pete only weighs 105 lbs!!!There is no end in sight as he grows out of everything every 2 weeks!!!! "Stop growing," Peter!!!

Superman and I are both on the shorter side (5'9" and 5'1" respectively) and our oldest looks like he's going to be that way, too. He's always been in the 25th-35th percentiles. We went to a new pediatrician a few months ago, and when the doctor showed me his charts, he had a look of concern in his eye, and I could tell he was about to ask me about Spiderman's height. I assured him that Spiderman's always been in that percentile. So though he's small, he's been growing consistently. But this has always been in concern in the back of my mind. Glad to know I can just ask for a wrist x-ray!!

I love that your kid is hitting puberty with some normality. My little brother's 14 and grew 4-6 inches in 6 months or so. It's crazy!

Way to Go, NATO!! Your voice changed quite early and very fast! You weren't even quite 13 and it was done. It would be pretty cool if you did turn out to be taller than Daddy. He always wanted to be tall like his Daddy, but, it was not to be.

GROW, GROW, GROW, GO, Go, Go!! But, no more "raging"! Be cool, kid.

Maybe you could make him sleep in a cardboard box at night
